Yes, I'm doing things a little different. I am reviewing Rain Man this week because it's the first of the films I'm researching and referencing for the first in my book series: "What Movies Can Teach Us About Disability Inclusion." Each of the chapters will focus on a specific movie that's about a specific disability, and this one of course will be about autism. I'll make sure to post my grades and reviews for the other nine movies that I'll focus on in the book, of which will include deafness in A Quiet Place Parts 1 and 2, muteness in The Shape of Water, and Locked-in Syndrome in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. I will be working on this book over this next year, and will plan on covering other topics in future books. I look forward to when you'll finally be able to read the first addition!
Now, here's a little review of this 1988 classic:
Now, here's a little review of this 1988 classic:
Everyone knows Rain Man for Dustin Hoffman’s perfectly natural performance in the title role, and you indeed do really believe he could have autism in real life. Kudos also to Tom Cruise and the rest of the cast in their roles. Although it’s certainly a product of its time, as the limited knowledge of autism back then shows, which lead to making the title character too shut in without any believable thoughts about the other characters. Even then, the road movie narrative feels so human as it effectively critiques the whole “greed is good“ mindset of the time.
